VAT Refund for Tourists

As a tourist, you are not required to pay Value Added Tax (VAT) on items more than 5,000 Baht that you intend to take out of Thailand. For most people the amount returned is very welcome and a pleasant surprise, so it is well worth making the effort to collect the paperwork you need for a refund. It is not that difficult to do either.

Stores participating in the refund scheme display a sign stating: “VAT Refund for Tourist”. If you make a purchase from these stores, ask for a VAT Refund form (P.P10) and keep the original tax invoice (s) a store gives you.

That is really all you need to do. If you take that paperwork to the ‘Customs Inspection for VAT Refund’ desk at Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Had Yai, Phuket or U-Tapao International Airports, you will be granted a tax refund. Bear in mind that the tax refund process is the final stage of your journey in Thailand – you will have gone through passport control on your return leg before you arrive at the appropriate counter. You can only make claims on the day you leave the country.

If your claim is for less than 30,000 Baht, you can receive a payment as a cheque or Bank Draft, or the amount can be paid into a credit card account. If your claim is for over 30,000 Baht, you can only receive payment by Bank Draft or payment into a credit card account.

Thai language guide

This is spoken or understood by nearly 75 million people, making it a significant Asian language that enjoys a well developed media including translated work, dubbed movies, television, radio, music, books, instruction manuals, software and children's material.

The language is part of the Thai-Kadai family, which covers languages spoken in a large swath of central Southeast Asia including the Northern reaches of Burma, Laos and Vietnam, and parts of Southern China. However, today only Lao is at all similar, the mother tongue for most Thais living in the Northeast (Isaan). Within Thailand there are four recognized dialects including Northern, Northeast, Central and Southern, but as a result of the Ayuthaya domination in the 18th century, the Central dialect became widely used and is now taught in schools and used on television. Mostly there are vocabulary or pronunciation differences between the dialects.

The main characteristic of Thai language is its use of tones, which turn an otherwise small group of sounds into a large vocabulary. This can be the most challenging aspect for a foreign learner, but it isn’t dissimilar to the use of syllable emphasis in English-you simply have to get used to each different sound. On the other hand, its simplified grammar and basic word use make it easier to get started.

The Thai language also uses its own unique characters, with no spacing between words. Making it difficult to read. But taking the time to memorize the characters greatly helps to decipher critical signs and open up the reading aspect of your learning. Although most Thais in tourist areas speak basic English, they greatly admire and appreciate those who’ve taken the trouble to learn even a few basic greetings.

Koh Panyee

This small island has a pictresque village, which rests precariously on small pilings and extends out across the water










Koh Panyee is a towering limestone outcrop jutting out of the sea at Phang Nga Bay.


Below the limestone hill, a Muslim village on stills has developed. This is Panyee. Many tourist brochures call it a floating village of sea gypsies, but rather permanent settlers who depend on the sea for their livelihood.


As Phang Nga Bay embraces tourism, the village of Panyee is cashing in by putting up a few seafood restaurants. These can be prominently seen as one passes the island. Another distinctive feature of Koh Panyee is the village mosque which towers over the rest of the stilt houses.


Koh Panyee is often the stopover point for tourist on their way to explore the caves and grottoes of Phang Nga Bay National Park, as well as the rest stop for trips to James Bond Island. I am documenting it so that you may have a better idea of the sights in Phang Nga Bay National Park.

Patong Live Music

If you're all about the music then you have plenty of options in Patong. There are quite a few places where the most important thing going is the tunes.


Fordie hard rockers there's Rock City on the beach road, which features AC/DC and Metallica tribute bands. It may not really be Angus Young or James Hetfield, but it's a good substitute. If you'd rather snap your fingers to some cool jazz, check out Saxophone, a long time Bangkok favourite that has mada its way to Phuket. Molly Malone's features Celtic music nightly, Banana Club (below the disco) also features live bands, as does Margaritas, at the Rat-U-Thit/Bangla intersection Until relatively recenlty you could almost guarantee a rendition of "Hotel California" in every live music venue, but times are a changin' and a new wind is blowing through the live music scene. The old favs still get an airing out but the both the venues and the bands have really gone up a notch.

Saxophone (Beach Road, north end) is the latest venue to elevate the music scene in Patong. Cloned from the original Saxophone in Bangkok, famous for its quality jazz, R&B and reggae Saxophone Phuket has some excellent musicians and a relaxed unpretentious atmosphere. It's the kind of place where you can just get up and dance to quality live music and feel totally unembarrassed.
Rock City (Beach Road, north end) All you metal fans requiring your daily dose should head to Rock City. Among the head banging bands is a AC/DC tribute band that just belts it out. Various live bands pump up the volume with cover versions of Scorpions, Van Halen, Metallica and other vintage metal.
The enthusiastic house bands at Scruffy Murphy's and Molly Molone's rarely fail to rouse the crowds, while the band at 2 Black Sheep usually coaxes more than a few out to the dance floor.
Live music has also hit the beach road with the rather obvious realisation by the hotels that people like to sit out in the open and listen to live larger restaurants now offer a live band with your lobster at places like. The Port at Banthai Beach Resort, featuring a lively and talented Filipino band.
On the corner of Soi Bangla and Rat-U-Thit road, Tai Pan, Safari and Star Club all feature a mix of live and DJ-spun music. A lesser-Known spot called Relics, on Sai Namyen Rd, is very popular with local Thais and packs people in most nights.

Tarutao National Park

Tarutao is the first marine park of Thailand. It is famous for its distinguished history and natural beauty.
It is located in the Andaman Sea 40 kilometres from town or 22 kilometres from Bara Pier. The park borders Mu Ko Phetra Nationl Park in the north and the Thai-Malaysian sea border in the south. The park occupies an area of 1,490 square kilometres and comprises 51 islands. Seven large islands are Ko Tarutao, Ko Adang, Ko Rawi, Ko Li Pe, Ko Klang, Ko Ba Tuang, and Ko Bit Si. Tarutao was proclaimed a Nation Park on 19 April 1974 and declared by UNESCO as an ASEAN Heritage Park and Reserve in 1982. The best time to visit is from November to April.

Ko Tarutao is the biggest island in the park that covers an area of 152 square kilometres. The island is teeming with verdant forests and white sandy beaches. There are also camping and diving facility to see corals.

Penitentiary Memorial on Tarutao Island comprises two parts; Ao Talo Udang Prison is at the southern most bay of Tarutao Island and Ao Talowao Prison, a prison, a prison for common and political prisoners which is situated in the south and the east of the island.
The historical six-kilometre road trail was built by prisoners connecting Ao Talowao to Ao Talo Udang and is 12 kilometres long.

Activities on Ko Tarutao

Walking trail from the national Park Office on Ao Phante Malaka is a 12-kilometre walking trail which runs through verdant forest all the way to Ao Talowao. Various types of trees, wild animals like wild boar and mouse deer, and birds, hornbills in particular, are found along sides this trail. An eight-kilometre walking trail begins at Ao ma lae ends at Ao Son, passing through virgin forest where various kinds of birds are found. Bird-watching is ideal here.

Boat rides on a long-tail boat around island for eco-tourism es recommended. The National Park provides boat service with guides for vesitors to tour around beaches. The journey could begin with bird-watching on Ao Chak, going to see the longest white sandy beach on Tarutao Island at Ao Son, tracing historical trail on Ao Talo Udang, enjoying natural beauty on Ao Talowao, ending with diving and visiting mangrove forests. Thai Shadow Puppets

Shadow puppet (Nang Talung) was one form of public entertrainment in the south of Thailand.
 It is still very popular at village festivals, temple fairs and celebrations such as marriages, etc. Its characters are made from intricately cut - out and articulated shapes of leather. They are delicately coloured, but this does not show during a perforance as the puppets appear only in shadow against a white sheet, with light shining through from behind. They are manipulated with rods control movements of the arms.

Performances may have a religious theme or be an episode from the Ramayana epic which contains dozens of individual stories. They may also be specially written to include up-to-the minute reflections, songs, and poems about local events and matters of current interest in the district or country. There are hundreds of different characters each with a distinctive silhouettem, but the show will almost always include a clown, funny old man, scatter - brained old woman or rather stupid yokel, who are all great favourites with the fun - loving audiences. Nakhon Si Thammarat province has one of the town's most popular shadow puppeteers named Mr. Suchart Sapsin. Like all good Nang Talung puppet masters, he is a man of many talents. He is not only expert in the craft of making the puppets but is also an award - winning writer and poet. He is narrator, speaking or singing all the parts using different voices, and is a superb mimic. And he does all this as he manipulates the characters from behind the illuminated screen. Suchat is one of the national artists.

A Jet Ski action is obviously the most popular and sought-after water sport available on Phuket beaches. Along Patong, a small single ski or a double ski are available for rent. The choices of outings come in two time schemes of either 15 minutes or 30 minutes. While this sport requires a license to operate, and you don't have one, don't get discouraged straight away. Go ahead , hire the machine, and invade the waves with the trainer. It's not cheaper of course, but rather safer for a beginner.
Banana Boat
Are the other water sports giving you the creeps? Why don't you try a Banana Boat ride? It is considered as one of the safest and cheapest kinds of water sport available along Patong Beach and the other beaches mentioned earlier. The process simply requires riders to sit on the Banana Boat which will then be pulled by the jet ski.
Parasailing
The magic of the colorful parasail hovering around the beach is inviting you to get the adrenaline pumping all over your body. The about five-minute process will require you to put on all your gears plus weights. You'll be allowed to take off of course, but not before making sure that all safety precautions are checked and met. If you're a novice to the sport, a rental staff will be asked to take off with you. This is to make sure that the round you will take will follow the direction earlier specified and a safe and smooth landing is ensured.

There are five Phuket beaches where you can legally use a Jet Ski-Karon, Patong, Kata, Kamala and Bangtao beaches.

You have to be a bit careful when renting a Jet Ski on Phuket.
You should only rent from licensed Jet Ski operators and their licenses should be available for inspection. You could be fined for renting from a vendor without a license. Anyone operating a Jet Ski in Phuket is also supposed to hold a 'Second Class Helmsmen of Power Driven Sea-going Vessels' certificate. If you have not got one (which we can assume most people do not!) there is seldom a problem. However, if you have an accident it is more serious. Operating a Jet Ski without such a certificate means if you have an accident you could pay a fine of 10,000 Baht! If you are worried about this, just go on a Jet Ski as a passenger. Phuket law dictates that if you travel on a jet Ski even as a passenger you must were a life jacket that has a whistle-not a bad idea anyway really! In addition, according to the law, you should not go further than 500 metres away form the coastline-again, pretty much commonsense. Likewise, if sea conditions are such that a red flag is raised to people stop swimming, you are not allowed to use Jet Ski...again, a very practical law which most people should be happy to follow.

A Closer Look at Muay Thai Beginnings

The Siamese developed their own writing system in the early 1200s which makes it difficult to obtain information on the early history of Thailand as well Muay Thai.


Muay Thai, for a number of times, has been the fighting medium used both in the local and international filming of action and other film genres. How this popular form of martial arts etched its prominence from ancient times through the present is worth pondering on.
The practice of variousforms of martial arts across Southeast Asia, and the whole of Asia for that matter, goes back through past centuries. Muay Thai for its part has been in existence since ancient times with influences that could be traced back to Muay Boran. The former is a descendant of the latter which is an older ancient boxing style.


Muay Boran which was used by Siamese soldiers in wars did not employ the use of any weapon but bare limbs. It was used to support the arm-based Krabi Krabong style of combat. With remarkable influences from Aditha, a boxing arts of Indian origin similar to Muay Thai and Muay Boran combined, Thai boxing aficionados also see very similar movements between Muay Thai and Shaolin Kung fu, a martial art of Chinese origin.
Muay Boran is further divided into various styles of combats. A famous saying goes, "Punch Korat, Wit lopburi, Posture Chaiya, Faster Thasao," best describes each one.


Muay Korat, from the northeast for example, emphasized strength. One of its techniques called "Throwing Buffalo Punch" could send the horned animal sprawling to the ground with just but one blow.
The strong points of Muay Lopburi from the center region were the straight and counter punches that were best emphasized in the movements.


Muay Chaiya of the southerners emphasized more on posture and defense, as well as the use of elbows and knees.
The northerners Muay Pra Nakorn emphasized on speed, particularly in the kicks. It earned the "Ling Lom", or windy monkey or Loris tag because of its use of faster speed.

Esteemed by the Thai Royalty of the past eras to the present, muay had paved itsway into palaces. At times the more excellent muay practitioners were asked to stay in the royal palace not only to provide needed security for the king but also to impart the skill to the royal household staffs, the king's personal guards, the princes and royal soldiers.


Muay Thai which used to entertain kings through centuries has gradually become very popular and has eventually invaded the international sport arena. It has developed into a sport in which two fighting boxers exchange kicks, punches, elbowing, and mental techniques amidst the shouts and cheers of very expectant spectators. Thai boxing has also become a common but important fixture that is integrated into local festivals and celebrations, including temple related ones.

Savoey Seafood History

Savoey Seafood Restaurant, established in November 1980 in Patong Beach Phuket. Is under the S.T.P.Group Co.,Ltd, which is owned and operated by Mr.Thaveesakdi Phucharoen and partneers. The restaurant is firstly positioned as casual dining restaurant. Featuring Thai, Seafood and Chinese dishes.


Flash back to 1 November 1980, Savoey Seafood opened with 100 seats and a 50 member staff. We operated a seafood kitchen in front of the restaurant (this layout has not been distorted since the opening), and we have two other cuisines which are Chinese and international foods cuisines.

In 1984 Savoey expended to Bangla road, increased to 600 seats and started with Thai dancing and culturre performance every night.

savoey Seafood is considered as one of the landmarks of Patong Beach and we have been considered by our customer as one of the leading Phuket's seafood restaurants.

This acknowledgement is not only the result of our fresh food, competitive prices but also the great taste of our food.

On 26 December 2004, the tsunami disaster significantly destroyed the main restaurant. Fortunately there were no number of casualties, this was due to the staffs effort of helping each other.

Mr.Thaveesakdi and his staffa (about 135 members during that time) renovated Savoey and Safari Beach hotel, starting the first days after Tsunami without electric and no water supply. Mr.Thaveesakdi used the power generator from his friend (free of charge) and water from artesian wells. We were compensated by the insurance company of 2 million Baht, which was incomparable to our loss. Our boss had just one direction "None of our employees should be layoff", we paid full amout of their salary.


It was onlu 10 days after that Savoey re-opened on 5 January 2005 in darkness (no electricity) and among tsunami remnants. With only 30% facilities and equipment ready, we were the first on beach road to run a business. Savoey just wanted to express our people's merit to the public that we were still here and ready to welcome the tourists back, in order to recover Patong's tourism industry.


After the disaster we opened Beach way Coffee shop in 8 September 2005 and Concaved Rest. in 1 Octorber 2005. And in the yeat 2007 our company expanded our serving outlet to the beach unit as Beach house which is designed to support customer from Savoey Seafood.


Currently we have 215 staffs and operate a new 5 star hotel named "Laflora Patong"

Loy Krathong was originally called Phraratchaphithi (Royal ceremony) ” Jong Plean Chak Kome, Loy Kome”, a Phram Tradition. The purpose was for paying respect to three Gods, Phra Issuan, Phra Narai as well as Phra Phrom.
When Thai People accepted Buddism. Loy Kome Tradition for paying respect to Phra Barommasaririkathat (Buddha’s Relics), Phra Chulamanee in the heaven called Daowadeung was begun. Loy Kome for paying respect to Phraphuthabath was made at the bank of Nummathanthi river, india.
Nang Nophamas, a wife of Phra Ruang who was the King of Sukhothai invented Krathong in the form of lotus and other forms for giving the King. Krathong were released to the river according to the King’s order. In the book called “Tamrab Taosrichulalak”, the King said “From today until the future, Kome in the form of lotus are invented eternally by Kings of Thailand on the auspicious day in November full moon shine, to pay respect to Phra Phuthabath Numkathanathi.
In the time of Rattanakosin, the big and elegant Krathong was beatiful mada according to a book of Rattanakosin belonging to Chaopraya to Chaopraya Thipha Ratchawong. When in November, at the date of fourteen-fifteen waxing moon, and first waning moon, originally the cousin of the king and government officers with strength were requested to invent the big krathong of Jong plean tradition.
Krathong were made in the form of barrel, pae Yuak (raft made of banana trees) which was 8-9 sok wide and 10-11 sok high for the purpose of contest. Krathong n the form of Khaosumeru, 4 continents or shelves were soometimes invented. They were decorated with Kueng Sod (decorations of fresh flowers of leaves) byhundreds of people until experts was nearly 20 chang or more.
At the present, Loy Krathong tradition is held in most of provinces. It is consicered to be the annual important festival, especially, themanifestation of bigand small Krathong, Krathong as well as Miss Krathong contest are held in Chiangmai.
Loy Kome festival is still popular in the north and northeastern of Thailand. Papers will be made for a big colorful Kome. Kome will be released into the air by smoke. But in the night, fire will be set by torch at the mouth of Kome in order to make the smoke go through Kome. After that, Kome will go into the sky. Kome and moon’s light as well as star are beautifully seen in the night.

Krabi is generally considered to be one of the best places in the world for rock climbing.With its thousands of sheer limestone cliff faces, overhangs, and caves, there is something to challenge everyone, from the professional solo climber to the complete beginner. If you can take your concentration off the rock face, climbing in Krabi presents some of the best views a climber will ever see.
Rock climbing in Krabi is well established. Around 600 routes have been mapped, graded and bolted around the climbing Mecca of Railay and Ton Sai Beach, where the soaring cliffs meet the sea, making for stunningly scenic climbs. Another 100 or so routes have been bolted in Ko Phi Phi , another amazing backdrop for your climbing activity. Advanced rock climbing.

Beginner rock climbing courses are offered in Krabi. They can be anything from a half day to 3 days' long. Naturally, the long the course, the more skills you learn-by the end of the 3-day course, you should be able to lesd climb a route yourself. In a nutshell, strong bolts in the rock face serve as anchors for a rope which a lead climber will use for securing a safety backup should they lose their grip.

Beginners have the benefit of a rope attached to their harness, which is secured to the a bolt at the top of the climb (called top rope climbing) and controlled by an instructor below. This method, used everywhere in Krabi is so safe and suitable for all ages and abilities. Each of the climbs is graded (using the French system) for consistency. You can even give your arms and legs a break and hang motionless in the aur while you catch your breath.

There are at least ten rock climbing schools in Railay and Ton Sai, and several more in Ko Phi Phi. all have good, English-speaking instructors and provide guiding srevices for experienced climbers, equipment rental, as well as rock climbing courses. Fitness and strength is obviously a plus, but on the rock face, you will find the sheer will to climb counts for a lot, too.

Over the years, many Thai and foreign rock climbing enthusiast have blazed routes up the many rock faces both here and on Koh Phi Phi and there are now more than 600 routes; from 5a's to classic multipitch 6a's, and even extremes of 8c. If you are serious about rock climbing in Krabi and will be hanging around awhile or returning its worth picking up a copy of king Climbers route guide(US$25), which is published(now in 5th edition)by a well known local climber.
A local climber by the name of Shamick Byszewski undertook the thankless task of rebolting many of the routes in 2005 using titanium bolts and public property open to all, if you wish to bolt routes of you own its advisable to consult with the locals rst to avoid stepping on any toes. These climbers make a living here and have put a lot of effort into opening and maintaining routes. Don't expect to simply show up and use them without making use of some of their services.

Mu Ko Hong is located at the edge of the Than Bok Khorani National Park, and is accessible by a 1-hour boat trip from Ao Nang. The park entrance fee is 200 baht per person with an additional fee of 20 baht per person for camping on the island.
Hat Tham Phra Nang

Accessible only by boat, this stunning, pristine beach has fine-grained white sand and crystalline waters as well as magnificent jagged karsts. This is a highly secluded picture perfect beach that attracts thousands of visits year round but is able tdo maintain its flawless appearance and relaxing ambience.

This beach is the location of the 5-star Rayavadee resort, a private property that occupies 26 acres of the beach and the only compound located near Phra Nang Beach.

Than Bok Khorani National Park

The national Park covers an area of 37.5 rai of land in Tambon Ao Leuk Tai. Its headquarters is located just one kilometer from Tambon Ao Leuk Neua Market intersection on the Ao Luk Sak road. The Park is covered by a canopy of diversse species of trees such as wild gardenia, asoka , and Apocynaceae that are scattered around Sa Bok Khorani, an attractive emerald pond after which the park is named where visitors can swim.

At the north end of Sa Bohk Korani, which flows through a winding passage on the mountain, is a wood carving of a footprint of the Lord Buddha and a shrine of Chao Pho To Yuan - to Chong. Other attractions in the park include several limestone mountain caves, verdant mangrove forests and beautiful islands which can be reached only by boat Admission fee is 200 baht per person. The Park dose not provede accommodations, but camping in the park es allowed although tourists have to bring their own tents.

Emerald Pool

This hot spring originates from a warm stream in the lowland forest of Khao Nor Juji which is supposedly Thailand's last piece of virgin and fertile forest. The intensity of the pools turquoise colored water varies according to the light and time of the day so visitors determined to see the real emerald color should plan to visit at dawn or early in the morning. The pool, which can be visited all year round. charges and entrance fee of 20 baht. To get there, take Highway No. 4 to Khlong Tho District, then turn left to Route No. 4038 to Lam Hap Sub-district. The Emerald pool is located along the way, with clear signs posted.

Susan Hoi or Fossils Shell Beach

Susan Hoi features a slab formed from a huge number of embedded various types of mollusks which can be dated to approximately 40 million year ago. This shell graveyard at Ban Laem Pho was once a large freshwater swamp, the habitat of diverse mollusks. With changes on the surface of the earth, seawater enveloped the submerged mollusks resulting in a homogenous layer of fossilized mollusk shells forty centimeters thick known as Shelley Limestone. With geographical upheavals, the limestone layer is now distributed in great broken sheets of impressive magnitude on the seashore. The site is located 17 kilometers from the town.

When visiting or living in another country, especially one with a culture as different as Thailand, it's worth learning a little about the culture and customs.
Not only will you go home with a little more knowledge of the world around you but it will certainly help when meeting the local Thai people. Much like the rest of Asia, Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist culture and much of its rules about how to be polite come direct from their religious beliefs. Though many of the customs may seem strange to a Westerner it's always worth remembering that you are in a foreign country and are ambassadors from your own, so though you may not get it right every time, an effort to understand and use Thai culture and customs will certainly be appreciated in Thailand.

Hands and Feet In Thai culture the head is spiritually the highest part of the body ans the feet the lowest and considered unclean. You should never touch any adult Thai on the head, especially if they are older than you, and it is even wise to avoid the heads of young boys as one day they may become monks.
You should never point your feet at someone or an object as this is considered disrespectful. A child can burst into tears because he has done something wrong and instead of his Father hitting him or scolding him he simply pointed his foot as the boy to show he had no respect for him.


Greetings-How & When to Wai The traditional Thai greeting is the Wai. The Wai is a prayer like gesture made with the palms of your hands begin put together accompanied by a slight nod and sometimes a lowering of the eyes.
The height of the hands varies as to the status person you are waiing, but generally speaking if it is person of importance for example, a monk or an older person, then the top of your fingers should be raised to the top of your nose.
A lot of people make the mistake of waiing too often and waiing a person they need not wai. The Thais will look on this as a bit strange. You do not need to Wai shopkeepers, waitresses or people in the service industry though they may Wai you, and as a general rule a foreigner needs to Wai very few people and they are either people older and respected personally, a friend's parents, or the owners of a home you are visiting.You will also find a handshake works just as well especially with a lot of Thai people, as they know this is the foreign greeting and is still a respectful thing to do.

Losing Face A lot is said about the tradition of a Thai losing face. There is no point explaining it here as foreigners have the same tradition. To understand it better and to put it in very simple terms, you just need to rename it is Western terms. Losing face is when you are made to look foolish in public. Of course the concept to Thai"face" can be explained in much deeper depth that this, but the above is a simple rule that works well for everyone.
To make some lose face is unadvised as people often take an unkindly to this as you would in the West. Be aware that for a Thai to lose fase is a very bad thing so try to avoid making them lose face at all costs.

Dress Shoes should be removed when entering a Thai home. You'll often see stacks of shoes outside an apartment room.
If you visit an official place such as the immigration office, always dress neatly. Shirtless, with no shoes on will not start you off the right way with the officials as they consider it disrespectful.
When going to a religious site again always dress respectfully and without showing too much flesh. Hot pants, shorts, no top etc. are not fitting clothers for these places and you will often not be allowed into them.
Shoes can be worn inside the temple grounds but not in the area where the main Buddha image is kept.

Smile It's not called the Land of Smiles for nothing. Smile whenever you can, when haggling for a price or whrn you have a problem that needs fixing. A simple smile can get you further than you can imagine.

Politeness Politeness is the key to good communication, with anyone, not just in Thailand. You will notice though that the Thais will often be overly polite with strangers, and thank you. Common courtesy should be used in any society but in Thailand it plays a key role in living here and enjoying the country.

Visa and Mastercard works fine in the ATM machines you'll find everywhere in Patong and Karon beach. You can also get money from the exchange booths but why should you when you have ATMs?

Hint!

If you destroy the magnetic stripe on your card your only way to get cash is to visit a Bangkok Bank office or exchange window, they can help you. My hotel room keycard destroyed my cards due to magnetic inside the keycard, I had to visit a lot of banks before getting help from Bangkok Bank! Thanks to them!

Exchange

The rates at exchange booths of major banks are pretty good but avoid these at the hotels or airport, they give you bad rates. You will get the best rates if you with cash from ATM machines, but it also depends on what fee's your bank charge, so you should withdraw larger amounts rather than small amounts.

Timezone

Thailand's timezone is GMT+7, seven hours ahead of GM/UTC (London). Sweden and central europe belongs to GMT+1. Thus, when 16:00 in Phuket the time is 10:00 in Sweden and 09:00 in London.
Thai Calendar

The official year in Thailand is reckoned from 543 BC, the beginning of the Buddhist Era. Year 2008 is equal to 2551 in Thailand.

Electricity

220v, 50Hz. The wall electrical outlets are usually of the round, two people type or two flat type. Some outlets accept both. What I've seen thais mostly use the flat type and in hotels there are often the type that accept both. It's easy to find adapters in electronic shops for any international plug shape.

Taxes

Value Added Tex is 7% altought this is applied to the manufacturer price, not the retail price. Hotels often add 7% VAT and a service charge of 10% to your room bill.

Postal rates

Airmail letters are charged 17 Bht ton Europe and Australia and 19 Bht to USA. Postcards are charged 12 Bht.

Telephone

Thailand's country code is 66. For international calls it's cheapest to call abroad from CAT (Communications Authority of Thailand) offices, often attached to the main post office. Althought there are many internet/email shops that offer telephone/fax service too. Avoid to make calls from your hotel, tought. (Expensive!) There are two kind of public pay phones in Thailand, the red one is used for local city calls and the blue one for both local and long-distance calls within Thailand. At bangkok airport you can use your credit card at card phones to make international calls, I am not sure if Phuket airport had such phones. Europe GSM cellular phones works fine in Thailand. Local cellular phone numbers begin with area code 01. If you make local calls from your cellular phone, don't forget to put 076 before the number,which is the area code for Phuket.

Clothing

Clothes are relative inexpensive and take the opportunity to get tailor made clothes at modest prices, but aviod the cheapest ones and those who offer 24 hours service. In my opinion, leave your clothes at home and buy your traveller wardrobe here.

Beaches in Phuket

Hat Karon (Karon Beach)
Located south of Patong Beach, Hat Karon is a curving beach that lies beautifully in the sun with small sand dunes, casuarinas and palm trees. The crescent bay is the beach's signature that drawing travelers attention. From May to October, the beach may by affected by serious undertows, as the bay open. Watch out for those warning flags before going swimming or surfing at the southern end of the beach. During the high season, the beach is ideal for relaxation, swimming or sunbathing. A wide range of accommodations, from top-end to budget and mid-range, are available. Other facilities such as nightclubs, restaurants and other evening entertainment are located along the beachfront road.
Hat Kata (Kata Beach)
Located approximately 17 kilometers from Phuket City are Kata Noi (Small Kata) Beaches. Both are renowned for snorkeling to se the coral, tropical fishes and the seas eco-system. Also worth visiting is Kho Pu, a small uninhabited island located off Laem Sai. Most visitors find snorkeling along the islands rich coral reef enjoyable. Diverse beach activities are available on both beaches. Accommodations on Hat Kata are set amidst tropical are cliff settings. Visitors can choose to stay in budget to top end accommodations according to their preference. Well known hotels located here are Club Med and the Boathouse. Hat Kalim (Kalim Beach)
Located north of Patong Beach is a secluded beach dotted with rocks and coral reefs. Accommodations and restaurants are available. Another interesting stopover is Freedom Beach which is located around the head of Laem Ka Sai Rot and is accessible by a chartered long-tailed boat.
Hat Kamala (Kamala Beach)
Located approximately 26 kilometers from Phuket City, Hat Kamala is a relatively secluded 2-kilometer beach that is suitable for total relaxation. Accommodations are available.
Hat Patong (Patong Beach)
This Beach is a most developed, most vibrant, most visited beach of Phuket that never fails to impress visitors. Located approximately 15 kilometers from the City, the beach has a wide range of accommodations and shopping arcades, and provides magnificent leisure activities and energetic night-time entertainment. It is a picture perfect postcard view of a 3-kilometer long white sandy beach that is perfect for swimming,lazing, and enjoying challenging water sports such as jet skiing, windsurfing snorkeling, sailing, and parasailing.
In addition, Patong offers gastronomical delights for seafood lovers. There are plenty of good restaurants located along the beach.
Hat Nai Han (Nai Han Beach)
Located a few kilometers from Kata Beach, next to Phromthep Cape, approximately 18 kilometers from town is Hat Nai Han, an extra-ordinary beach that has white powdery sand and crystal clear water. The beach borders on two charming landscaped lagoons surrounded by rubber trees and other tropical plants. As the beach has not yet been fully developed to its full potential, it is less crowded, more peaceful, thus is ideal for people seeking solitude. Holidaymakers are not recommended to swim during the monsoon season from May to October. Watch out for the red flag!
Despite having a rather limited selection of accommodations, they range from budget bungolows to the top-class Yacht Club. Check with the TAT phuket Office for more up-to-date information and room rates.
This beach can be reached by songthaeos, which leaves from the intersection of Ranong Road and the fountain circle. The fare is 25 baht/person/trip. In addition, visitors can also charter tuk-tuks which costs a lot more at 150 baht to 200 baht/trip.
Hat Rawai (Rawai Beach)
Located approximately 17 kilometers from town is the less crowded, more peaceful and less commercial beach with a second-to-none pristine beach. The Beach is home to well-established community of Phuket Chao Le people (sea gypsies). In addition, from this beach visitors can charter boats to explore other offshore islands. Hat Laem Kha, located to the northeast of the beach, is the departure point for those wishing to visit Koh Lon, and Koh He, Laem Phromthep, Phukets landmark, is located at the southern end of the beach. This cape is an ideal spot for diving and snorkeling. Accommodations range from budget bungalows to middle range resorts.
Getting to the Beach is easy by songthaeos, which cost approximately 20 baht/person/trip. Songthaeos depart from the stop at the circle for Ranong Road, while chartered tuk-tuks will cost more at 150 baht/trip.
Hat Surin (Surin Beach) Located approximately 24 kilometers from town and only in a short distance north of Laem Sing is an enchanting beach lined with casuarinas trees. Isolated and secluded, the beach is ideal for sunbathing and relaxing. The Beach, however, is not suitable for swimming as it has a steep sloping beach and the weather fluctuates during the southwest monsoon. In addition, there is a golf course which was established in the reign of King Rama VII.
Several Muslim fishing communities are located nearby and Mosques are situated to the west of the beach. The local Mosque, Matsayit Mukaram, is worth visiting as it is an elegant whitewashed structure with lacquered wooden doors.
To get there, travel along Route No. 402, after reaching the Two Heroines Monument, turn left and proceed for approximately 12 kilometers.

Tucked between two tourist Meccas-Phuket and Krabi-Phang Nga Province offers mountain biking opportunities for adventurous travelers as well as experienced cyclists. No real mountain biking experience is required, though you will likely enjoy youself more if you have a bit of familiarity.


General Cycling Tour Information:
Who can join: Anyone in average physical condition can join this cycling tour. Experienced mountain bikers are welcomed too. Don't worry about getting tried. This is not meant to be a physical challenge. Mountain bikes allow you to get closer to nature and to travel in silence.
Accommodations: Simple hotel in Phang Nga Town or home-stay.

Group size: Minimum of two guests and a maximum of six guests. Private tours are available on request.

Season: All year. The most comfortable time of year is from November through March. April and May are the hottest months. June through October is the rainy season. September is the wettest month. For monthly weather information, check out our weather calendar.

Phang Nga Province
This cycling destination is off-the-beaten-path. Winding roads pass through spectacular limestone karst mountains and through rubber plantations. You will be on paved road at times and off-road as well. There are countless single tracks through the jungle and countryside.

There is an optional visit a cave temple is on village. A villager won the lottery and spent some of the money on making the temple more attractive. Sturdy stairs take youn to the elevated caves. The hand railing is solid and the footing is secure. There are several caves within the temple, As you'll be in a religious site, you'll need to dress appropriately. We will supply women with sarongs to cover their legs. Shoes, of course, are left at the base of the stairs.
Just a hundred meters from the temple, there's a cave that leads all the way to another village. The cave has a creek running through it. Your mountain bikes will be waiting for you on the other side.
Hazards will be deal with as needed. If we come to a place that looks slippery or dangerous, we will likely walk the bikes. Some side bikes are also available. This is a mountain biking trip, but it's also a nature and culture tour. You will be part of a very flexible journey through back country with opportunities to engage with the locals. Each day's travel distance is up to the group's inertia/energy. It ain't a race.

This was declared a national park in August 1991. The park occupies a vast area of 150 square kilometres and covers Amphoe Thai Muang, Amphoe Kapong, Amphoe Takua Pa, and Amphoe Muang.



There are many interesting attractions: Khao Lak, the mountain is located 25 kilometres from Amphoe Takua Pa, on Route No.4(Thai Mueang-Takua Pa), taking a left turn between kilometre markers 56 and 57. Before reaching Amphoe Thai Mueang, the mountain - Khao Lak - can be seen. On the mountain, there is the Chao Pho Khao Lak Shrine. Opposite Khao Lak lies a stony beach with rocks and boulders of all sizes strewn all over the beach.
Laem Pakarang Located on the Takua Pa - Kho Lak route. driving from Takua Pa town on Phetkasem Roa, the cape will be on the right, another 5 kilometres down the side road. It is a sandy beach piled with deer coral washed up on the beach by strong waves thus giving the beach its name. The beach is blessed with groves of pine, making it ideal for camping and relaxation.

Similan is a Yawi or Malay word, which means nine or a group of nine islands.This is a located in Tambon Ko Phra Thong, Amphoe Kura Buri, occupying an area of 32,000 acres. Interesting Attractions in the National Park include:



Ko Similan or Ko Paet is the largest island in this group of islands. It has a distinctive horseshoe-shaped bay. The average depth of the water is 60 feet. Underwater is full of rock formations and coral reefs in several shapes and forms such as deer, leaf, brain, and mushroom. The latter one is the most unspoiled coral found in the country. Its soft sandy beach is very beautiful and diving around here will let you see a lot of fishes and coral. To the north, lies a striking large rock formation with astonishing shapes such as boot and Donald Ducks head. The upper part of the beach is an ideal lookout point with a rock of a sailing boat shape.

Ko Ba-ngu is the ninth island of the Similan group of islands. It has a strange feature. Looking from one point, the shape of a skull can be seen. Underwater is as beautiful as a valley full of coral reefs, deep gorge, and various sizes of fish.
Ko Huyong ,the island offers the whitest and longest beach of all the nine islands. During turtles'egg laying season, from November to February, there would be tracks on the beach from turtles that come onshore to lay eggs, resembling centipede tracks.
Ko Miang is the second largest island among 9 islands after Similan Island. It is where the office of the National Park is located. The island offers a scenic beach which is suitable for camping.



Diving Spots



There are several diving spots that suit both snorkelling and scuba diving. The famous scuba diving spots including rock formations that lie to the west of Ko Tachai where whale sharks can be seen, Ko Bon, Christmas point rock formation, Fantasy rock formation, and Ao Kwang En(to the eas of Ko Paet),etc.
Snorkelling spots are scattered around these nine islands. The interesting points are by the sailing boat rock, Ao Kwang En, and behind Miang Island.




How to Get There Thap Lamu Pier, located 70 kilometres north of Phang-nga at Amphoe Thai Mueang, is the nearest point to Similan. A boat trip takes around 3 hours. There is no regular boat service for travellers to the island. Boats leaving from Thap Lamu are suitable for group tours and the boat rentals range from 8,000-10,000 baht, depending on various factors. It is sometimes possible for individuals to hitch a side or pay a reasonable fraction of the rental cost on a boat chartered by a group. This method is by no means certain and should be an option only for the adventurous who have time to spare. Prices range from 9,000-25,000 baht, depending on the level of luxury, and include food, and accommodations.
